'Our Sons at Gallipoli'
Sacred Heart College Auckland

About the documentary:
In commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of World War 1 and Gallipoli, Sacred Heart College is creating a documentary in remembrance of all New Zealand’s fallen soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. The documentary is called ‘Our Sons at Gallipoli’ and will follow closely the story of Lieutenant Colonel William Malone and the journeys of past Sacred Heart students and their families. There were 47 Sacred Heart College students killed during World War 1 and four as a result of the Gallipoli campaign.
In late April 2014, a group of 27 senior students, along with teachers, parents, and a New Zealand film crew travelled to Gallipoli to commence filming footage for the documentary. Each student was responsible for the research and honouring of each solider where they laid a cross with his name and date of death marked and a poppy at each memorial. The College students performed and impassioned Haka and sang the Gallipoli hymn. The story that constructs the documentary will be told through the eyes and understanding of these students.
During 2014, Sacred Heart College representatives will be connecting with the families of soldiers who passed away at Gallipoli and those who served there to incorporate their stories into the documentary.
The second project is to create awareness and obtain support from the broader New Zealand public to sign a petition in support of Lieutenant Colonel William Malone being awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. The story of Lieutenant Colonel William Malone and his comrades who died in the battle at Chunuk Bair will be encapsulated in the documentary: ‘Our Sons at Gallipoli’.
